Three winners on Friday set us up nicely for the weekend.

But the results did not go our way on Saturday at Cheltenham and Doncaster which can happen at this time of year.

While quite a few of our runners didn’t enjoy the testing ground at both meetings, others ran with great credit including Saphir Du Rheu, Coillte Lass and Topothegame.

I was delighted with the excellent run of Saphir Du Rheu who jumped really well and should be winning soon over a bit further. Topofthegame is exciting for the future, a big, raw horse who was a bit too free for his own good but still ran with bags of promise against more experienced novices. He will not be going to the Cheltenham Festival this year.

Ibis Du Rheu ran well despite being hampered at a crucial stage of his race and Old Guard showed enough to warrant a crack at the Coral Cup but I am going to keep Ptit Zig for a spring campaign.

At Doncaster Coillte Lass ran a blinder to finish third to Vroum Vroum Mag in the £50,000 Mares Hurdle and will appreciate a return to two and a half miles. Caid Du Berlais ran very well in the Skybet Chase on ground that was all against him while Vicente was staying on strongly at the finish and wants another mile.

Spring is around the corner with the promise of better ground that suits so many of our horses. We are going to busy over the next three months and hopefully Team Ditcheat will be flying again.

This weekend we have plenty of entries at Sandown on Saturday and Musselburgh on both days. I’ve put four in the Scilly Isles Chase at Sandown with Clan Des Obeaux the most likely runner if the forecast for plenty of rain this week is correct.
